Causes life-shortening health problems: lung, mouth, and throat cancer, heart disease, pulmonary disease. 21% of all deaths in canada over the past decade- smoking-related illnesses. Average expectancy- lowers to between 7-14 years shorter. Packaging with pictoral messages (black lungs, rotting teeth, diseased hearts, sick children) paired w/ verbal message much more useful than text-only messages. Body mass index (bmi): statistic for estimating a healthy body weight given individual"s height. Health risks with obesity: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, certain forms of cancer. Genes account for 50-90% of variation in body weight. Genetics influence: metabolism, body type, physiological processes contributing to body weight & size. Individual differences in physical activity- important determinant: people who gain weight expend less energy in normal daily activities. Hours of tv watched correlates w/ obesity likelihood; no correlation b/w time spent on computer & obesity likelihood: perhaps b/c computer- requires some engagement vs. passively watching tv.
