Hypothalamus stimulates release of hormones contributing to development of primary & secondary sex traits. Primary sex traits: changes in body that are part of reproduction. Secondary sex traits: changes in body not part of reproduction. Frontal lobes undergo shift in myelination, speeding up neural firing. Frontal lobes also undergo wave of synaptic pruning. Relatively unused synaptic connections broken, leaving more efficiently functioning brain. In non-western cultures, transition from childhood to adulthood was smooth. Key to effectively regulating emotions is able to draw flexibly upon diverse set of self control strategies. Those who rely on limited strategies are at greater risk of depression & anxiety. One of most effective strategies is cognitive reframing. Ex: failure looked at as learning opportunity. Delay gratification: putting off immediate temptations in order to focus on longer-term goals.
