The following characteristics are exhibited by the female reproductive system: Cyclic changes in activity: the system undergoes a series of structural and functional changes called the menstrual cycle each month. The beginning of each cycle is makes by menstruation. Restricted periods of fertility: ova (eggs) mature at di erent and are released from ovaries once every 28 days. The release of the eggs is known as ovulation and it occurs in the middle of the cycle. A female is only fertile for the period of days that ovulation occurs in the cycle. Limited gamete production: they are about 2-4 million germ cells which develops to become ova. This number reduces constantly through life in a process known as atresia; the degeneration of germ cells at some point in their development. Only about 400 eggs are released through ovulation over a woman life time. Composed of dense connective tissue well supplied with blood vessels.
