POL200Y1 Chapter Notes - Chapter Study Questions: Interjection, Condottieri, Philopoemen
Document Summary
In chapter 8, machiavelli has considered the most infamous way of coming to power: through crime. In chapter 9 he considers the most respectable one: through election by one"s fellow citizens. See if you can state the difference between coming to power through crime and doing so through machiavelli"s recommended means of gaining election. In chapter 9 machiavelli brings a new actor onto the stage of the prince: the people. that means us. (so far as i know, there are no princes enrolled in our course. ) The people are the commoners who make up the majority of the state a prince holds, and so although they are very weak on their own, are very influential as a group. The people want only to not be oppressed, whereas the great, or the nobles, desire to oppress (as it solidifies their power). Once again machiavelli seems to be floundering about.
