Reading: challenging assumptions about minority participation in us. There is a lack of representation for minorities in clinical trials. Increasing the participation of all minorities in clinical trials is critical for the production of knowledge about new therapies this is because it can improve generalizability of medicine. Most literature only focuses on phase iii. Hypothesis: representation of minorities in clinical trials changes dramatically when taking a broader view of study participation. Minorities might actually be overrepresented in studies involving healthy volunteers. Goal: use phase i participation data to question the assumptions commonly held about minorities in clinical trials. Literature on barriers to clinical trial participation: distrust. Minority populations commonly cite mistrust of medical research to explain their lack of interest in clinical trials participation. Literature on barriers to clinical trial participation: provider perceptions. Physicians are less likely to prescribe certain treatments to their minority patients.
