NFS284H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Glut4, Triceps Brachii Muscle, Lean Body Mass
Document Summary
The heat is generated by metabolic reactions that convert food energy into atp and use atp for body processes. Indirect calorimetry: a method of estimating energy use by assessing oxygen utilization. Oxygen use and carbon dioxide production is measured through a mask. The burning of fuels by the body in cellular respiration uses up oxygen and produces carbon dioxide. This method can be used to measure individual components of expenditure, such as bmr or physical activity. It"s not the preferred method, but it cannot determine the proportion of energy used for bmr, physical activity or tef. Eers (estimated energy requirements) are the amount of energy recommended by the dris to maintain a body weight in a healthy person based on age, gender, height, weight and activity level. In order for an eer to be calculated, activity level must be estimated first.
