NFS284H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Portal Vein, Pylorus, Gastric Pits
Document Summary
Contrast digestion and absorption: digestions involves chemical and mechanical breakdown of food, absorption involves extracting nutrients from food into the body. In the brain as is releases the hormone gastrin which increases secretion of gastric juice. What valve separates the stomach and small intestines? pyloric valve. Why is chyme released slowly: to allow adequate time for neutralization by bicarbonate. Describe the lining of the small intestines: contain villi and microvilli (brush border) to increase surface area and absorption, a blood and lymphatic vessel (lacteal) are present behind, the cells responsible for absorption are called enterocytes. What happens after: amino acids and monosaccharides because they are water soluble, enter the hepatic portal vein before entering the liver to be further metabolized and possible stored as glycogen. What happens after: monoglycerides that were repackaged in the enterocyte as triglycerides in a chylomicron, enter bloodstream at the shoulder and after being absorbed the now called chylomicron remnant heads to the liver.
