Because the scientific study of a language starts with a careful examination of its sound system. Alphabetic characters are usually unreliable because they don"t always provide a guide to the actual pronunciation. To come up with a set of instructions for producing all possible sounds with the vocal apparatus: define the following terms: Phonetics description of how sounds are articulated. The study of intonation features, stress patterns (prosodic analysis) The comparison of the sounds with spelling symbols (orthographic analysis) Points of articulation place in the mouth where a sound is articulated. Manner of articulation the way in which the airstream is modified by the moveable organs (e. g. , the lips, jaws, tongue, and vocal chords) Vowel sound produced with no obstruction. Consonant sound produced with some obstruction to the air stream.
