Traits influenced by more than one gene (interactions) Single-gene traits in people usually involve abnormality that is disabling/life-threatening. Pedigrees aid the study of hereditary traits in human families. Can use large number of families w/ several generations of large family. Can study lots of genetically related individuals. Pedigree: family history shown in diagram w/ family"s relevant features. Can tell if trait determined by alternative alleles of single gene. Can see if single-gene is dominant or recessive. Roman numerals to left/right of diagram = generations. A vertical pattern of inheritance indicates a rare dominant trait. Huntington disease shows up middle age affects people mentally + physically. B/c shows up later in life h disease = late-onset genetic trait. If found in one parent, children have 50% of getting disease (if don"t die before 50) Need to know if disease if dominant or recessive.
