Document Summary

Week 2: contested slavery: violence, rebellions and marronage. David barry gaspar: antigua slave conspiracy of 1736 - origins of collective resistance. Discusses a slave plot to blow up a ball and kill all the whites in the town, but it was discovered. Antiguan whites might have believed it existed when it didn"t, or exaggerated it"s extent. The slaves that testified may have been coerced into exaggerating as well. Beginning of the 18th century - blacks > whites due to increasing slave demand. 1820s - white population was decreasing (disease, drought, leaving). Elevation of many slaves to positions of higher status with too much independence and too intimate contact with whites. Creole (born there) and skilled - benefits slave owners because they do not have to train them, but they also know the plantations and communities very well (easier to start a revolt).
