North american air masses: classified by moisture and temperature of source regions m c. Lifts warm air, causes vapor to condense as it cools. Clear sky, high pressure, anti-cyclonic: cp only in northern hemisphere. Boundary set by position of jet stream. Air mass modification: physical attributes become more defined longer air mass remains stationary over region, characteristics change as air mass migrates, lake effect over great lakes. Cp air passing over warm lakes absorbs moisture and heat. Low pressure system north of lakes pushes air across lake. Convergent lifting: air lifting from different directions into same low pressure area, upwards displacement, itcz, cumulonimbus clouds develop, high average annual precipitation. Convectional lifting: maritime source region to warmer continental region.
