GGR223H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Invisible Hand, Resource Depletion, Marginal Utility
Document Summary
Solutions to war, conflict, and human population should not be limited to only technical solutions. A technical solution is one that requires a chance in only the natural sciences, not a change in opinion, values, or ideas of morality. There are a class of human-related problems that cannot be solved with technical solutions. People who wish to solve the overpopulation problems seek for technical solutions only; and expect to avoid the evils of overpopulation without giving up any of their privileges. We cannot maximize good and population simultaneously; two variables that cannot be controlled together and cannot be biologically achieved. The notion of work calories vs. maintenance calories. The acquisition of energy is the problem with overpopulation; and when that isn"t a problem, dissipation becomes one. Our marginal benefit decreases each time we visit a national park; theoretically, the value of this common good will eventually dissipate.
