Geographical = the patterning of activities on the earth"s surface: economic geographers: how economic patterns across space are configured, and why things happen where they do. Space is not a straightforward idea; not just where things happen, but also why. Absolute space: definable measure of position; grid of points that we can describe using a system of coordinates: helps understand the friction of distance. Cheap electricity, cooling systems for the heat generated by computer, good connectivity to the internet, etc. Similar to how a saw mill has to be located next to a river. A bounded space under the control of a group of people, usually a state . Governments help shape the nature of economic activity within their borders. Governments = largest employer and purchaser of goods and services. National governments may surrender absolute control of land to city governments: ownership of land allows private entities to exercise control in economically important ways (mall regulations, deforestation, construction, etc. )
