Tutorial 2 alternative methods (guest lecture by david evans) Today will be an overview on reconstructing phylogenetics. Deals with relationships at or above the species level. Not change within species, but change among species. Darwin"s tree diagram is the only figure in his book the origin of species: he shows rate of evolution by the slope of the tree branch, also includes extinction events. A phylogenetic tree = graphical summary of evolutionary history of a group. Discovery: using logic to discover historical systems. Explanation: necessary but not sufficient, b/c trees can map out the nature of the organism through time but not through changes in the environment. Evolution can only act on heritable material in the population. This is what makes darwin different from lamarck. Is the embodiment of nature of organisms through time. But we also need the nature of organisms through environment.
