Chapter 11 the challenges of sustainable development. Economic development: implies improvements in efficiency, organization, distribution of resource use or other economic activity, not necessarily increases in resource consumption, different from economic growth. Economic growth: material increases in amount of resources used. Sustainable development: emphasizes improving current economic development and limiting unsustainable economic growth. Sustainability intertwined with social justice: no sustainable development without making sure all parties benefit, environmental degradation disproportionately affects poor. Sustainable development overused and often misappropriated: large corps and organizations misuse term to greenwash industrial activities while not making significant changes, people and ecosystems will likely suffer. Some argue that big areas must have no development and should remain wilderness: not best option because some places need humans. Restoration and management: harms local interests. Primary conflict of sust dev is between powerful and vulnerable. Individual and group decision to prevent destruction of habitat and species in order to preserve things of economic, cultural, bio, scientific or recreational value.
