Document Summary

Testing for gift exchange in labor markets using field. Use gift exchange to maximize worker effort in data entry and door to door fundraising. Field experiment suggests effort significantly higher in first few hours with gift treatment, with no difference after initial few hours. In aggregate, gift treatment yields lower aggregate outcomes for employer. Neoclassical economics treats labor as hired input in same manner as capital. Firm pays market clearing wage and workers provide minimal effort. Not supported by empirical evidence some employers pay more than market clearing wage and workers seem to invest more effort. Worker gives gift of more effort in response to gift of higher wages. Assumes positive relationship between wages and worker effort levels. Laboratory experiments may not be reflective of real labor market because interactions in labor markets typically last for long time versus short time in lab. People react differently to long run and short run.
