CRI215H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Misdemeanor, Sheryl Sandberg, Working Mother
Document Summary
Week 2: bargaining in the shadow of the law. Sheryl sandberg is lauded as a champion in asking women to lean in (to maximize their opportunities by being brave) and to have a plan b (to recognize other career avenues). Sandberg speaks to the educated and able bodied, as many in power do. They ignore the lower class that cannot afford a plan b. Living paycheque to paycheque allows not enough resources (and thus, agency) to curate an optimal way of living. The same body of legal norms guaranteeing the poor a minimum wage is also one that demonstrably pardons the rich from fraud. Though the legal system was designed to protect, it seems to be needed most by the demographics it seems to fail most often. The week"s readings tackle the issues of incarceration and poverty (of money and of basic amenities), systematic marginalization, and the inextricable evolution of law and society.
