Chapter 8 (goff) - the courts and criminal trial procedure. Available for anyone charged with an indictable offence. Those who fail applications - other services available such as duty counsel, student clinics, community clinics, or the option to represent themselves. Philips - fired his lawyers and represented himself, court ruled there is no right to funded legal aid for every case. Decline in funded representation causes individuals to represent themselves. 1999=2000 only 9% of cases went to court, most decisions made early on in the case. Hann and colleagues - many accused"s convicted without being represented. Rising number of legally unrepresented poses pressure on court players who end up with increased work load. Self representing individuals will slow down trial process because judge will have to intervene. Aim to serve justice through deterrence and punishment. Concerns day to day operations more than serving justice and protecting rights.
