Legends attached to early history of rome = saga. A few are associated with specific local heroes. More important than ares: origin: agricultural deity worshipped by many italian tribes. Associated with spring + regeneration + growth and used to name march: magical flower allowed juno to give birth to mars without a father, consort nerio = minerva.
