Document Summary
The stage of the design process when the design team generates possible solutions to the design problem. This stage is characterized by use of creativity methods to develop as broad a set of solutions as possible. Any process that increases the number of possible solutions to a problem or increases the breadth of a problem. Divergent thinking means imagining ideas that are very different from existing solutions or solution pathways. An abstract concept of a space that encompasses all of the design solution ideas that are being considered at any point in time during a project. Developing requirements de nes the boundaries of the design space. Expanding the scope of the project expands the space. Discarding ideas, i. e. , removing solution ideas from consideration or reducing the scope of the project, shrinks the design space. Building and testing prototypes or models explores (investigates) the design space.
