Communicative competence the ability to use a language appropriately in specific interactive settings (i. e. you have to be socially competent and know how to speak with people) To be able to speak with people you need to have both linguistic and communicative competence. Speech acts the idea that whenever somebody speaks they put on an act (ex. stating, predicting, warning) and the meaning of the act is to be found in what words it brings about.
