Document Summary
Archaeology the study of material remains and their spatial relations ships to interpret the past; ultra-interdisciplinary. Sub-disciplines: archaeology, socio-cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, biological (evolutionary) anthropology. The sum of all physical evidence from the past. Because of intervening cultural and natural processes, the archaeological record is not usually a dire(cid:272)t refle(cid:272)tio(cid:374) of past (cid:271)ehaviour. Artifact any object made or modified by people. Ecofact natural object used or affected by people. Feature non-portable material remains resulting from human activity (e. g. house, fireplace, etc) Archaeological site a place where evidence of past human activity is preserved. ** artifacts can enter the archaeological record at any point in this process. Climate (temperature and humidity, extreme wet, dry or cold will preserve) Soil chemistry (acidity can destroy, good soil will preserve; fossilization). Disturbance through industrial or agricultural development (changes the context of materials in the archaeological site). Considering the above factors, the archaeological record is now extremely distorted.
