Most of the variables we want to study do not exist. Ex. religiosity - measures how religious someone is. Ex. religiosity - how many times you go to church, now much you donate. These variables do not exist in reality, they have no real meaning. Prejudice - shortcut to present unrelated phenomena. Everyone has a different understanding and definition of it. Conceptualization - coming to an agreement of what a term means resulting in a concept. We al have a sheet of paper in our minds by phenomena. Your mom could see pat as sentimental instead of how you see her compassionately. The more similar our sheets, the more we understand and correspond with others. We can only measure things that are real. We cannot measure how compassionate someone is. Three classes of things that scientists measure. Things we can observe simply and directly. Ex. check mark female, it was indirectly observed.
