Before riots, lang. of instruction in public schools was debated heavily, public school system was contributing heavily to anglicization of montreal. Schools teach students common culture that forms framework for social life, endow young people with key capacities of communication, coordination, and economic productivity. Schools create homogeneity out of diversity (by teaching uniform curriculum to all students), but also sort students into different social classes. Mass schooling is a recent development tied to industrialism and maintaining modern, productive economy. Education not only turns students into citizens by giving them common outlook but also reproduces class structure and structure of global inequality. Education system displaced organized religion as main provider of formal knowledge, second (to family) in importance as an agent of socialization. In past, small minority of people learned to read and write, compared to today where in canada, 64% of people age 25 64 yrs. have some postsecondary education, highest level of participation than in any other country countries.
