Family violence as a concept brings up a paradox. On the surface of things, family and violence are often taken up as opposites. Family is construed as a haven in a heartless world . Those who are uncomfortable recognizing families as sites of violence often say that it occurs only in exceptional cases, perpetrated by sick individuals. However, this approach is not a useful one for understanding family violence from a sociological perspective. We tend to internalize messages that state that violence lurks out in the world rather than at home, and yet women are in fact at greater risk of violence in and near their homes than in the public arena. Studies have also found that women are at increased risk of violence when certain social conditions are present. Intimate femicide: the killing of women by their intimate male partners.
