Religion: a set of organized beliefs about the supernatural or spiritual worlds and their associated ceremonies that guides people"s behaviour. Faith: a belief system based on conviction that does not require objective evidence to substantiate its claims (a person can have faith for god, without having first-hand evidence to support the claim) Saw that cultures evolve from simple primitive communities to complex states over time. 1st stage: animism: belief that all things possess a spirit (plants, animals, ppl; inanimate objects mountains, rivers) 2nd stage: polytheism: belief in many gods; can be diffuse, with all gods considered equal, or hierarchical, with gods ranked in importance or power. 3rd stage: monotheism: belief in a single, all-powerful, all-knowing god. Civil religion/secular religion: exists when sacred symbols are integrated into the broader society regardless of individual religious affiliations. In god we trust on us currency.
