Education in canada : education"s function in society is to pass on knowledge. In canada school is compulsory until age 16, the earliest forms of school have made in the 19th century, established by missionaries and religions orders . Europeans wanted to replace aboriginal knowledge and lifestyles. In the later half of the 19th century, Aboriginals weren"t allowed to express their cultures and were forced to conform to. Ontario was the first to offer free education, the other provinces followed. Boys and girls were often segregated in school with separate entrances, separate playgrounds, separate seating in classrooms. Girls were streamed into domestic science courses and boys were prepared for the labour market. Gendered expectations among teachers and parents where girls were prepared to be housewives and boys were prepared for advanced studies. Massification: the mass increase in post secondary enrollment, in contrast to the smaller numbers that constituted on elite group.
