PSYC62H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Ketamine, Tegmentum, Nmda Receptor
Document Summary
Inhalants represent a large class of compounds that include volatile alkyl nitrites, nitrous oxide, and volatile solvents, fuels, and anesthetics. Nitrous oxide: (aka laughing gas) represents another recreationally used inhalant largely because of its euphoric effects, along with a mixture of depressant and hallucinogenic effects. Next up = gasoline, butane, xylene, and acetone these chemicals are hydrocarbons and exist in household chemicals (many inhalants are hydrocarbon chemicals, which consist entirely of carbon (c) and hydrogen (h) atoms) Xylene = found in certain cleaning solutions and in solvents for dissolving oil-based paints largest inhalant users = adolescents. 1) none of the products containing commonly abused inhalants is illegal to purchase (i. e. sniff glue) 2) intoxication users achieve from inhalants wears off quickly, allowing an inhalant to be used after school and then go home sober soon afterward. Two of the oldest known psychoactive inhalants: nitrous oxide and ether.
