Document Summary

Most maligned age group in our society. To some extent, these accounts were supported by statistics, particularly during. Fears were also fueled by atypical illustrations of juvenile crimes: particularly heinous account of murder committed by juvenile/those associated with # of school shootings. 1st decade of new century continues to see such atypical accounts, including school shootings: increased along with incidents of gun violence perpetrated by adults. Bullying, cyber bullying, sexual assault, & dating violence have attracted media scrutiny. Behaviors may be less widespread that they appear to be based on media accounts. Since mid-1990s, we have seen decrease in crime committed by youths across most crime categories, including both property & violent crime, but there are periodic upward spikes. Juveniles as group are responsible for small % of arrests compared with adults, but they are arrested disproportionally compared with age groups. This may be due to their naivet at committing crime & fact that they often commit crime in groups.
