PSYC31H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Rela, Agnosia, Explicit Memory
Document Summary
Historically, clin approach to studying brain function involved neuro exam, which studied behaviour. Neuros examined: strength, efficiency, reactivity, appropriateness of patient"s responses to commands, questions, discrete stim of neural subsystems, body structures for evidence of brain dysfunction challenges to muscle groups and motor patterns. Neuro exam looked at behaviour patterns generated by neuroanatomical subsystems measured responses in gradations: recorded imp responses that might be missing. Mental status for neuro exam is focused on higher behavioural (cog) function. Neuropsych exam = detailed version of neuro exam. Neuropsych findings interpreted within clinical context, considering historical, psychosocial, and diagnostic info. Early and current electrophysiological instuments to study brain function: eeg. Can help diagnose seizure disorders, sleep disturbances. To assess processing speed and efficiency: electrodermal activity. Sensitive to emo responses and feelings nonconcious brain processing: magnetoencephalography (meg) To examine brain functions in norm/abnorm brains. For brain mapping: functional brain imaging to study norm/abnorm brains.
