Document Summary
Psyc18 chapter 7: appraisal, knowledge and experience. 1961 patient with epilepsy had operation to separate left side of the cortex from the right to stop the spread of epileptic disturbances. This is called split brain operation and in it the corpus callosum is severed. Despite two sides being no longer in communication, the patients iq, personaliy, language, and ability to engage in meaningful interactions were not diminished. With a split brain the two hemispheres do not communicate. Example by michael gazzangia showed firhgtening film to woman with split brain but the images were not accessible to the left hemisphere of her brain she was not conscious of having seen the film. Appraisal and emotion: when events are evaluated, assigned value in terms of the individuals concerns that evaluative process is called appraisal. The process is automatic, like a reflex, and has nothing to do with language.
