PSYC14H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Walter Bradford Cannon, Autonomic Nervous System, Ilongot Language
Document Summary
Ilongot tribe"s head-hunting raids: kill because of liget . An emotion marked by passion, energy, and rage. What is the emotion experienced in the situation where hiker sees bear and runs: hiker"s pounding heart, emotions are physiological responses or bodily reverberations to stimuli in the world. Physiological responses were products of autonomic nervous system. Our bodies respond to stimuli by preparing us to react in survival-facilitating way. Emotions are our bodily changes that signal how we should behave. Each emotion word is description of a different bodily state. Embarrassment: sensation of blood rushing to face. Love: feeling of one"s stomach turning end over end. Distinctive physiological patterns identified that correspond to certain emotions: other literature call into question specificity of physio patterns assoc w/ emotion. Criticized j-l theory bc autonomic nervous system seemed too clumsy/slow to be differentiated into all emotional states ppl experience. Such a simple system could not have provided complexity to cover wide array of emotions felt.
