PSYC14H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3-5: Counterintuitive, Likert Scale, Binge Drinking
Document Summary
Cultures change over time, behavior considered polite can be considered rude over time based on cultural norms. Region people live in affects things like type of food available, foraging behavior. Gender roles can emerge from these- (ex: masculinity in placed where large game is hunted, androgynous roles and less violence where food is plentiful) Small difference in ecology can have large effects. Proximal causes: direct and immediate relations with their effects. Spanish defeated incans because of superior weaponry and disease spread to incans. Distal causes: initial differences that lead to effects over long periods, often through indirect relations. Spanish had superior weaponry because of agriculture, sedimentary lifestyle which lead to domestication and development of tools. Less time spent on food-related tasks and more focus on inventions, writing systems, etc. Protected from disease due to exposure to animals. Evoked culture: all people have innate behavioural repertoires that are engaged in the appropriate situational conditions.
