Section 1. 1: neuroscience in the 21 st century. Brain: a physical object, a living tissue, a body organ. The term brain signifies both the organ itself & the fact that it produces behaviour. 200 disorders maybe related to brain abnormalities. Brain is the anglo-saxon word for the tissue found within the skull. The human brain comprises 2 major sets of structures- the cerebrum & the cerebellum: the cerebrum (forebrain) has two symmetrical halves called hemispheres. Responsible for most of our conscious behaviours. Enfolds the brain stem which is responsible for most of our unconscious behaviours: cerebellum- the second major brain stem structure, specialized for learning & coordinating skilled movements. Human ns is composed of nerve cells or neurons which most directly control behaviour. Brain and spinal cord (b+sc) makes up the central nervous system (cns: cns is central both bc it is physical located to be the core of the ns & bc it is the core structure mediating behaviour.
