PSYB65H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Episodic Memory, Epigenetics, Positron
Document Summary
Here is the note from the remainder of chapter 7 (page 222 onward) that we are responsible for knowing for the final exam. The 4 major techniques for looking @ brain"s electrical energy are ------ single cell recording, Electrical behaviour of cell bodies and dendrites -----> graded potentials is more varied and slower than that of axons ----> action potentials: recording action potentials from single cells. Microelectrodes placed next to cells (extracellular recording) or inside cells (intracellular recording). Benefit of extracellular recording is that you can look at as many as 40 neurons at once. Benefit of intracellular recording is that it allows direct study and recording of neuron"s electrical activity. Disadvantages of single cell recording are that it kills the cell and cannot be done in animals that are awake. Confined to neurons grown in a dish for hours for neurons of living brain slices.
