Document Summary

Self-control process by which an individual deliberately alters or changes his or her behaviour to achieve a specific goal (aka self-modification/management) Behavioural approach focuses on effective vs. ineffective consequences of behaviour. Problems of behavioural excesses: immediate reinforcers vs. delayed punishers for a behaviour, immediate reinforcers vs. cumulatively significant punishers for a behaviour, immediate reinforcers for problem behaviour vs. delayed reinforcers for alternative desired behaviour. Behavioural model of self-control: clearly specify the problem as a behaviour to be controlled, apply behavioural techniques to manage the problem. Self-control occurs when an individual behaves in some way that arranges the environment to manage his or her own subsequent behaviour. The individual needs to emit controlling behaviour to effect a change in their own behaviour to be controlled. Specify problem and set goals - recall: discussion about goal setting. Make a commitment to change - e. g. , make public statements, tell your friends about your plan, put up reminders for yourself, troubleshoot ahead of time.
