Satiation is an unconditioned motivation abolishing operation (umao) because it decreases the effectiveness of food as a reinforce without prior learning. The behavior-altering effect of umos, is learned. Some mos alter the effectiveness of consequences as reinforcers or punishers because of prior learning. Such mos are called conditioned motivating operations (cmos). Knowledge of cemo and cs is important in being able to reliably and effectively use either as antecedent variables to influence behavior.
