Chapter 9: responding at the right time and place: stimulus discrimination and stimulus. Stimuli: people, objects, and events currently present in one"s immediate surroundings that impinge on one"s sense receptors and can affect behaviour. Behaviour can be analyzed in three sets of events: stimuli existing prior to behaviour, called antecedent stimuli, behaviour, consequence of behaviour. Identifying the antecedents and consequences of a behaviour referred to as abc (antecedents, behaviour, consequences) assessment. Stimulus control degree of correlations between occurrence of particular antecedent stimulus and occurrence of a subsequent response; good: when stimulus occurs, response is likely to follow. Other stimuli consistent predictors that particular behaviour will not be reinforced. Discriminative stimulus (sd) stimulus in the presence of which a response will be reinforced. Discriminative stimulus for availability of reinforcement for responding (s ): stimulus in presence of which a response will not be reinforced. Discriminative stimulus for the non-availability of reinforcement for responding (extinction)
