Document Summary

Identify a response that could be used as a starting point in working toward the final target behavior. Reinforce the starting behavior; then reinforce closer and closer approximations until eventually the final target behavior occurs. Shaping: can be used to establish a behaviour that the individual never preforms. Shaping is defined as the development of a new operant behaviour by the reinforcement of successive approximations of that behavior and the extinction of earlier approximations of that behavior until the new behavior occurs. Shaping is sometimes referred to as the method of successive approximations. There are 5 aspects or dimensions of behavior that can be shaped: topography- is the spatial configuration or form of a particular response. For ex: teaching a child to switch from a printing response to a writing response, teachi(cid:374)g a child to say (cid:862)mo(cid:373)(cid:373)y(cid:863) instead of mama: frequency- or duration of a particular behavior as the amount of that behavior.
