Socialization teach children basic values in their culture. Provide means for children to acquire skills and resources they need to be economically productive later. Directly and indirectly teach children skills, rules, strategies. Manage children"s lives, including exposure to experiences and info, and opportunities to play with certain toys and children. Structure is evident through interaction patterns (5) there are boundaries that vary on continuum from open to closed. Open: allow elements and situations from outside to influence it. Closed: self-contained; isolation of members of family from environment (6) use unwritten rules, messages to shape behaviour (7) have shared narratives and traditions (8) have subsystems with their own rules, boundaries, and characteristics. Conflict itself has impacts, but also the way conflict is handled. Parental conflict affects boys and girls differently. Boys: display more externalizing behaviour; more susceptible to negative consequences of parental conflict. In divorce, degree of parental conflict seems to be best predictor of children"s adjustment.
