Document Summary
Information-processing approach: human mind works like a computer. Input = info from environment processed through perception and attention. Storage and retrieval = info is encoded into some symbolic form. Info is either expelled if no longer needed or saved so at some time later it can be retrieved and used for thinking or solving problems. Software = rules and strategies of thinking and problem solving that are learned over the course of development. Human cognitive system has 2 main limitations: (1) amount of information that it can process at one time (2) speed with which it can process information. 4 basic assumptions of information-processing approach (1) thinking is information processing (2) there are mechanisms or processes of change that underlie processing of info. Four key mechanisms = encoding, strategy construction, automatization, generalization (3) cognitive development is a self-modifying process. Child plays an active role in their own cognitive development (4) task and error analysis are necessary.
