Document Summary

The concepts of genotype and phenotype provide a framework for exploring the interactions of genes and environments. Genotypes: the particular set of genes that a person inherits from her parents. Phenotypes: created by the interaction of a person s genotype, or genetic makeup, wit the environment; the visible expression of the person s particular physical and behavioral characteristics. Zygote results from the union of male and female gametes or reproductive cells which carry genetic information. Two basic concepts: at any given gene s position on 2 homologous chromosomes, there can be more than one form of that gene (alternative forms are called alleles) If alleles from the 2 parents are the same, the organism is the hr that gene and the trait homozygous for that gene and the trait that goes with it. If the alleles are different, then the organism is heterozygous for that characteristic.
