Starting with dsm-3, classification came to be based on observable behavior, not on presumed etiology. Anxiety is not observable in the somatoform and dissociative disorders. In somatic symptom and related disorders, the individual complains of bodily symptoms that suggest a physical defect or dysfunction but for which no physiological basis can be found. Somatoform disorders reflect the mind-body connection and the growing realization that psychological and physical functioning interact with each other.
