PSYB30H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Molecular Genetics, Dopamine Receptor D4, Twin
Document Summary
Jim twins creepily similar, raises the question of what role genes play in personality. Genome: the complete set of genes an organism possesses. The human genome contains somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 genes. Recent studies have sho(cid:449)(cid:374) that these portio(cid:374)s of dna (cid:373)a(cid:455) affe(cid:272)t e(cid:448)er(cid:455)thi(cid:374)g fro(cid:373) a perso(cid:374)"s ph(cid:455)si(cid:272)al size to personality, thus adding to the complexity of the human genome. Some of these genes can influence the behavioral characteristics that form our personality. Controversy is sometimes ideological: scared that findings in behavioural genes will be used to support particular political agendas. Sometimes controversial bc people may end up thinking that only genes affect a childs outcome and not their parental socialization or personal experience. Eugenics: the notion that the future of the human race can be influenced by fostering the reproduction of persons with certain traits, and discouraging reproduction among persons without those traits or who have undesirable traits.
