Most children approach grade 1 with mixture of eagerness & anxiety. 1st day of (cid:498)regular(cid:499) school is milestone, sign of developmental advances that make this new status possible. Cognitive advances during 1st 5/6 years of formal schooling, from age 6-11. Piaget"s stage of concrete operations enables children to think logically & make more mature moral judgments. As children improve in memory & problem solving, intelligence tests become more accurate in predicting school performance. Abilities to read & write open door to wider world. Changes, & controversies over iq testing, bilingual education, homework, & mathematics instruction. Influences on school achievement & how schools try to meet special educational needs. ~ age 7, children enter stage of concrete operations & begin to use mental operations to solve concrete (actual) problems. Children can think logically because they can take multiple aspects of situation into account. Their thinking is still limited to real situations in here and now.
