Chapter 8: physical development & health in early childhood. Physical development during years from ages 3 to 6. In early childhood, children"s body proportions change & they get taller & slimmer. They need less sleep & are more likely to develop sleep problems. They improve in running, hopping, skipping, jumping, & throwing balls. They also, as group, encounter range of health & safety risks from obesity to allergies to those with e bases. Children grow rapidly between ages 3 & 6 but less quickly than during infancy & toddlerhood. Age 3: children begin to take on slender, athletic appearance of childhood. Head is still relatively large, but other parts of body continue to catch up as proportions steadily become more adult-like. Both boys & girls grow 5-8 cm (2-3 inches) year during early childhood & gain about 2-3 kg (4-6 pounds) annually.
