Document Summary
The social psychological study of the self usually begins with william james. In his book the principles of psychology (1890), james introduced many concepts about the self that continue to inspire research today. He coined the term the social me to refer to the parts of self-knowledge that are derived from social relationships. Who a person is in one social context (with soccer buddies) is often not the same as who the person is in another social environment (with a romantic partner) People do indeed focus their attention on themselves in a deliberate attempt to enhance self-understanding. We construct these self-narratives, mcadams maintains, to integrate our many goals, to make sense of conflict, and to explain how we change overtime. Your narrated self, right now might focus on your choices for a particular life path a career, a romantic partner, the pursuit of particular values. Vivid and engaging self-narratives enable people to feel happy and fulfilled as they age.
