PSYB10H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Reactive Devaluation, Stepfamily, Social Rejection
Document Summary
Hotter cities have higher rates of violent crime, and more violence occurs during hot months than during cool months: media violence has been shown to promote aggressive acts in real life. When a highly publicized suicide occurs, copycat suicides follow. Children who watch violence on tv tend to commit serious crimes as adults, compared to kids who don"t. Many situational factors contribute to the likelihood of aggressive behavior. Looking upon frustrating things from a distance makes people more peaceful. People"s construals of situations can be crucial in determining whether they act aggressively. When any kind of stimulus triggers anger, we"re more likely to act aggressively. Our tendency to dehumanize others, to deny them basic human nature and human uniqueness, can fuel aggression. We are not prisoners of such hostile construals. Cultures differ greatly in their propensity toward aggression of various kinds.
