More than high / low s-e: act in a volatile fashion to threats to their self-esteem. Processes by which people initiate, alter, and control their behavior in pursuit of their goals. Self-discrepancy theory- people hold beliefs not about what they are actually like but about what they ideally want to be and ought to be. Actual self- self you believe you are. Promotion focus- regulate behavior with respect to ideal self standards; attain positive outcomes.
