Document Summary

Chapter 1: psychology is a way of thinking. In the context of the design, researchers formulate hypotheses. Researchers then collect and analyze data, which feed back into the cycle. Non-supporting data lead to revised theories or improved research design. Scientists make it public - the publication process: scientists publish their findings in scientific journals. Scientists talk about the world - from journal to journalism: It is important to be able to interrogate information in mainstream sources that you encounter in daily life. In order for coverage of scientific research in journalism to be beneficial to both the wider public and the original researcher(s) themselves, the journalist need to report on the most important scientific stories and describe the research accurately. Is the story important: sometimes journalists cover only the most sensational, eye-watching, "attractive" research s studies to report on, and not necessarily the most rigorously tested, peer-reviewed ones.
